Dogs Helping Kids
Dogs Helping Kids train carefully selected dogs as both educational and therapeutic aids to work with and help children and teenagers (aged between 6 – 18) in school, colleges and libraries. DHK School Dogs teach children non-violence, empathy, respect, kindness, love, responsibility, friendship and trust. It takes 3 years of dog training with the charity and passing 6 increasingly difficult assessments for a dog to certify as a DHK School Dog, and then each year they are annually assessed in their place of work. The impact DHK School Dogs have on both children and teenagers is life changing and has made an impact where all other therapies have failed.
Pet Respect delivers educational workshops to school children. The workshops are ‘Animals Feelings and Needs’, ‘Animals Role in War’ and an Anti Bullying presentation. They also offer Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) to smaller groups where they tailor sessions to suit the needs of the child or young person. The children have various challenges and social issues and therapy dogs are used to help improve their self esteem and wellbeing.
